The word 'Doula' is greek and means 'caregiver' or 'mothering the mother' It is pronounced 'doola'.
A doula is often a mother herself, and therefore has experienced childbirth and knows how you 'feel' both emotionally and physically during this time.
What is the role of a 'birth doula'?
As a birth Doula I will usually meet you and your partner at least once during the pregnancy to discuss your hopes and possible questions you might have about the birth. My aim is to help you prepare in every way and to support you before and during the birth. I will be with you during labour for as long as you need me, providing full support for you and your partner until you welcome your baby into the world.
Once you are home I will visit you and should you want to know more details about the birth experience, i will be happy to go over it with you.
What is the role of a 'post natal doula'?
This will vary according to your own needs but my aim is to help you get the most out of these precious first weeks with your baby, this could be helping you to bathe baby for the first time, assisting with care for older children, grocery shopping, as well as giving you the opportunity to ask questions regarding the care of your new arrival.
Most of all, i am there for you.
